Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) moth 1803 (V39)

Shot with my 70-200 VR plus Canon 500D closeup lens, using 2 flashes on a Manfrotto macro bracket (see picture @ http://www.pbase.com/image/19220130. )

This lens combo gives surprisingly sharp, saturated macros for a large, complex zoom with a closeup attachment.

Very nicely done image. Excellent framing and cropping and nicely balanced. I have seen these in my garden every year except this year. Of course I only started doing macros this year.

Great image, Duncan. You need to be ready when one of these monsters comes along. First time I came upon one in the garden, I had 3 extension tubes on my lens and couldn't even get back far enough to take in the whole of its being. They're huge. Reporting the discovery to my wife, I believe I described it as being a "flying lobster."
