Did you know that this is a female painter? This painting is a companion piece to her more famous "The Rose". Where as "The Rose" is majestically transcendent, "The Jewel" seems to capture some of the struggle we mortals have to rise above our earthly, physical selves and evolve.

DeFeo was a San Francisco artist and mostly known (during her lifetime) on the West Coast. She died at 60 in 1989. Only since the late 1990s has her work begun to attract the attention it so justly deserves.
