Dead cities from Hama april 2009 8749.jpg

These pictures were taken at Al-Bara, a city that is to a great extent hidden amidst all sorts of vegetation. It is quite large. Highlights are some churches and a couple of pyramid tombs, but many, many big buildings are standing part-hidden in the surrounding hills.

The first set of pictures I took were of what is described as 5 churches. Moving in and out of the several halls I lost track so I do not really know if I have visited them all. They are set so much together that it feels like moving in and out of chapels of one big building. I hope in due course someone who knows the terrain precisely can add to this scant information. They sit on a hilltop at the end of a road with some fine views of the surrounding country (containing much of the city).

Thank you so much for your wonderful photos. I visited Syria, including the Dead Cities, in April 2009, and your photos have made me enjoy it all over again. Love your country for its immense beauty and lovely, gracious people. Hope your problems are over soon as if there is a country deserving of living in peace and happiness that is your own. Best regards and best luck in everything you do.
Mily.
