Nemrut 2006 09 1450.jpg

Detail of the giant limestone statue of Zeus-Oromasdes, on the upper level of the east terrace. The double name of the god indicates his syncretic nature: Greek and Persian (Ahura Mazda is the Avestan name for a higher spirit of the Old Iranian religion). He is the god sitting in the middle of the row. The statue was nine meters in height (the fallen head included).
A highly developed technology was used to build this colossal statues, which were eight or nine meters in height (the fallen heads included).
