Istanbul ramble 1314.jpg

view map

In the foreground the Şebsafa Kadın Mosque from 1787 by Fatma Şebsafa Kadın, one of the women in the harem of Abdül Hamit I. In the background you see the Süleymaniye.

Picture taken from a park on the other side of the busy Atatürk Bulvar.

The Süleymaniye has four minarets, placed at the corners of the courtyard, north of the mosque. Two of them have two balconies, the two other have three.
In Süleyman’s day a choir of some 250 muezzins climbed to chant the call to prayer from the ten galleries of the four minarets (25 on each balcony!).
