One of the surprises of the centre of "old Istanbul" is that behind many of its old and often dilapidated house fronts will be quite modern complexes of little shops. And since the city there is built on quite steep hills on may get in at "ground level", go down one or two floors, and get out again, at "ground level" but on another side.
