Ankara june 2011 6923.jpg

Two musicians and a dancer. The figure on the left plays the double flute.
The central figure gives the rhythm with the wooden rattles which he holds in his hands. This kind of instrument still exist in North Africa; in Turkey they have been replaced by wooden spoons (in folk dance), or metal finger cymbals (‘zil’) in belly dance.
A relief from the ‘Royal Buttress of Yariri and Kamani’ in Carchemish/Karkamış (on the Euphrates River and on the Turkish-Syrian border, c. 25 km south of Birecik). Neo-Hittite, traditional style, c. 8th century BC.
