This is a supporting stick (mütekka or muin). During a retreat that itself lasted 1001 days, there was a period of more intensive retreat for 40 days, when a dervish trainee would be more restricted: eating and drinking even less, and not sleeping lying down. The stick would support them under their chin while sleeping standing up.
