Traditional rice paddies - seen while traveling from the Gassho-zukuri Village in Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa

Rice farming is part of the Japanese culture and necessary for the Japanese to be self sufficient regarding food. Farmland is relatively scarce in Japan with 70% of the country being mountainous. Many homes do not have backyards but rice paddies instead - as seen in this photo. We noticed that rice paddies occupy much of the flat countryside. More rice paddies are seen in the background of this photo.
