A sarubobo (a symbol of Takayama) hanging at Takayama Jinya in Old Town, Takayama

Sarubobo means "baby monkey." A sarubobo, such as the one shown here, has become a symbol/mascot of Takayama. Supposedly it brings protection, a happy marriage and a happy home. The reason most sarububos are red is because red supposedly purifies evil spirits and provides protection from infectious diseases, in particular smallpox. Two possible reasons for the blank face: 1) Originally they were made from scrap cloth. 2) The child who is given one can imagine any face depending on his/her mood. They are for sale throughout Takayama as dolls or amulets and come in many shapes, colors and sizes.
