And what they were really saying:
Don't look now, but that guy is taking our picture again! Try not to look. Don't worry so much, he's probably that famous lighthouse photographer!
Nice shot Don!!!!!!!!~

Okay, Don, I see first you (finally! thanks!) then the two women, might be mother and daugther, the shopping bags from daughter and maybe they discuss what to take for dinner.
gary becker15-Oct-2005 01:45
This is simply an amazingly good photograph.

very unfair don!!!:)).... i mean you've said it all... hehe! and so beautifully penned your thoughts.... only they seem to be mine too...shows we are all connected at a deeper level...joanteno has added an interesting angle that i experience many times too!!
very interesting image.... with a transportation device in the reflection that implies..."this too will pass" and change is the only constant!
cheers and best wishes...
joanteno14-Oct-2005 13:11
The first thing that I saw was your reflection-- then the women at the table, pellergrino, and women eating to the left. Interesting exercise. My mind does not follow the rule of thirds.. must check into that!
Donald Verger14-Oct-2005 09:36
ok, a friend joanie once said, she like my photography... she liked all the RED... i said, what red? and then began looking a my work, bits, spots, highlights of red! everywhere... in all most every image... white white snow coming down AND a RED door... i had no conscious idea! so i used pbase... and as others have i now see.. made a gallery called red... and then changed it to include what i think my eye see... red/pink/orage/yellow... this WOMEN has red/pink oragne and yellow! then later, and you can find these galleries... i began to wonderf what i really liked and why i liked certain shots...
i think my favorite of my shots has a mood, a peace, a gentleness AND has PINK... i will make it the image on my profile page in a few moments..
and realized that that it is the pink of red/.... that is restive and peaceful and hopeful for me
and truly i wish to be sooting in B&W, how about you?
so you can find my gallery now called just pink... and i should put this image in there
but with ADD/ADHD i have a lot of thoughts and my profile page reminds me that i have made something like 140+ galleries... often of just the same shots
so good luck finding ... just pink...
AND
i know i love white,,, i imagine the white table cloth and the lamp with floatin "sate-lites" also fired some synapses for me...
and mood, i love the intimacy... and i was a voyeur... yet out in public, not hiding, and walking back for a 2nd and then third shot
and i LOVE BLACK... i have a shot of
PINK flowers against a barn wall where you see the black nail heads in a moving line and a window, so BLACK
sp mysterious to me and i remember a moment of light/green ( i have grown to like green)...
a moment of green and LIGHT thru/behind the BLACKNESS and i swayed with the moving camera to hope to veal that bit of GREEN HOPE... and the PINK flowers are out of focus and most of you say, good/fine... its sfter that way,,, today i agree but i drove 6 hours to try to focus this summer... and the BLACK window was greyed over with plastic

and there was no HOPE showing thru... and the flowers where past on the same date! and the young couple that live there had recently hit a 1400lb moose on back dark vermont roads
and she was very badly injured
and I need to remember and gather the information to send them/ i have not met them.... the photograph and bother to frame it

images seem to exist in just a moment/for just a moment of juxtaposition ... of subject/ mood/ and the changing light...
going back doesnt work to well for me and is not in my nature...

I will put the shots i am talking about in one gallery in a moment and make it my first gallery among all the others

and a WHITE snow scene, a pattern/geometry of 3 white roofs and BLACK/BROWN

i love the tension of BLACK and theWHITE... the possible journey from darkness to lightness
from despair to joy
and i have had the grace to travel through that journey and be happy and joyfull often today

i will write more later, but for now

i now see and my eye enjoys the following

1. the quiet bottle of san pelligrino to the right
2. they both have black bags, one with a silver loop and i want to see more of it
3. i LOVE the frindge coming out of the shopping bag... what is it, who is getting it
4. i love her two finger poised, gently i think on her menu and her other hand as well

5. i LOVE the pink!!!
6 what is her necklace? can we zoom in and see... let me know
7. i love the salt and pepper shakers huddled close together in their own little hiding place... friends
like r2d2 and cpo

8... i especially love the quietness of the lone glass of pelligrino... and the highlights it has

9.. it is the center and signifyies someting for me... a clarity or simplicity
10. i like the origaminess of the folds in the WHITE table cloth and they remind me of folded..."peace cranes" and those who seek peace and walk for peace and are peace

i feel

that there is tension as others have said... there eyes do not meet and one is waiting and wanting to me... maybe the daughter

i love the 3 charis dancing /gathered on the left and more salt and pepper friends, i like and am comforted by repetition

i LOVE the motion of the shopping bag strings and i have come to love BLUE!!! and the pink gentle shot that is my faovirtie of my 20,000 has pink and blue and gentlness and white and who knows what else... possibilities... the shot that will be my profile page shot for today

i love the blue and the blue on the water bottle and the soft blue green of the obverse of the right side pelligrino bottle

I LOVE her hair and have come in 57 years to finally know that i have been attracted and met and married women who's hair first caught my eye and maybe a smeil a lightness of being

i see a women all alone i think eating soup, i cant eat soup and wonder why, but accept it for this moment

i see the darkened WHITE clothes displayed in te newbury street shop window across the street
i like the blackness and quietness of the mothers dress and her necklace... light

what WHAT is hanging over the edge of the table cloth attached to somehting black?

i love the motion of a piece of the daughters hari and the motion of the blue bag straps and the motion of the frindges spilling out

and the one earing and her profile

and the

RED

me ... shooting with one hand holding many many heavy books of aritist work we had just viited in the VOSE gallery in boston on newbury street and remember i couldnt chabng the expousrer and soot with one hand with a cannon i would like to use/get instead of my non slr that hunted to focus this moment
and yes
it all can disappear and the cars can float ot the surface... maybe more to say later :) one day ill know if i like this shot alot or not and what it holds and means for me.... there is a story... for all of us...

It looks like you are leaning out of the mini van window while taking the shot (yikes--does this mean your hands are not on the steering wheel?!) The hood ornamnet is amazing: a bottle of San Pelligrino water that hasn't spilled even at that rate of speed! They are mother and daughter. Daugther is tense (see how she holds the menu and look at the taut face and neck muscles). Mother seems to be disappinted by something (once again....). The large lamp is especially cool with its smaller satelite moons hovering nearby. Lots of energy in this shot. Very nice, Don.

The woman on the left has asked the other woman what she'll have, and the woman on the right is about to tell her.
Sharon Rogers13-Oct-2005 19:39
First I see their faces, then you, then the car then back to the faces which leads me to the lady on the left and her pink sleeve. :=)
Gayle P. Clement13-Oct-2005 14:27
My eye goes straight to their faces, so intent in whatever they're discussing. It's only later that I see you, the photographer.
Chris Sofopoulos13-Oct-2005 12:39
Very good Donald. Like it very much.
Faye White13-Oct-2005 12:21
wonderful! perfect comp with the figures, your reflection, packages - all of it!
Neal Nye13-Oct-2005 12:16
I like the reflection. It adds an element of mystery to the story here.
Gilles Navet13-Oct-2005 10:54
Sorry Donald but I don't eat in this sort of place
I prefere little morocco or italian restaurant,
I like to feel "true life" vibes when i eat !!!!
But the pic is perfectly done, great composition

i see you, i see 2 women totally engrossed in conversation, they don't drink in the middle of the day, its a mum and daughter discussing the grandchildren possibly? or the breakdown in her marriage?
they both have a serious look on their faces, maybe because the beef is off!!
whatever the story don, its a good candid shot and i very much like it!!
