A "Jack the Ripper Tour" is hard to resist, so in spite of my father's urgings to do a "literary tour" and look at Sherlock Holmes things, I trotted around the Tower of London area and Whitechapel one night following a very knowledgeable tour guide.
The Whitechapel area is where Jack the Ripper prowled and it still is not the best of neighborhoods, though not as dangerous as some. This street was filled with neighborhood restaurants, many of them on the look-out for tourists and tour groups such as the one I was on. "Hey ... good deal inside if you come in now" ... the guy standing at the edge of the photo promised me 20% off my meal if I could convince the entire group to come in right now. I shook my head. "Special food then for you .. good deal... good deal." It began to remind me of the guys who stand outside bars, promising that the dancers inside are "barely legal" or "all college girls in here!"
