1920's - "Oriental (sic) Architecture At Opaloca (sic)"

777 Sharazad Boulevard, Opa-locka, Florida

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing this great old image of Opa-locka's city hall complete with minarets. The caption writer erred in the architecture - it is Moorish and did not spell the city name correctly.

And also this is not "Oriental" architecture. This is more Mughal Empire type architecture with the minarets & domes. Looks very much like a mosque.

This town that I was raised in back in the 40's-50's was neither Oriental or Moorish. It was based on a dream of the builder, Glenn Curtiss, the story of "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. He had a partner name of James Bright. Curtiss's home in Hialeah was also the design of Arabian Nights.

In 1965 there was a library upstairs in this building. It is funny how you take things for granted when you are young. I used to ride my bike there and check out books. Sue Rockwell

Thanks for the memories. Born and raised in Opa-locka. Wow, what a place it was back then. I remember it well.
