Thank you to Robert Bowman for contributing this scan of the Miami Herald article on the demolition of yet another historical landmark in South Florida. The decision to destroy the pier by then-Mayor Malcolm Fromberg and the City Commission, without a public hearing, despite pleas by preservationists was atrocious. Mayor Fromberg's quote at the meeting was "The city can build another pier anytime." So where is the replacement pier? It was never built and hundreds of thousands of people have been denied the opportunity to fish from a pier jutting out into the ocean. This is yet another reason to dislike self-serving crooked politicians, especially in South Florida. The fishing pier that was built alongside the north jetty of Government Cut is not a replacement pier because it is in Government Cut and parking in the area is a considerable walk from the pier and outrageously expensive because it is South Beach.
