I remember back in the days when folks used to run numbers based on the order of the dogs coming in. Think of it as OTB betting but not exactly legal. back in the days the cocaine cowboys were big into playing bolita. also "Puerto rican tickets" were big also, large sheets would come in, get cut up and sold in the bars to the "Cocaine cowboy" high rollers. One of the ways to hedge if there were large bets on a specific trifecta was to book a bet on that trifecta with a different bookie to cover an unexpected payout.



I remember watching how people ran numbers back in the days, it was interesting stuff Miami was like the wild west for a while. When I was a kid I wanted to be a bookie, but never did, joined Wall street instead :)

Anyhow you can be a legal bookie now a days selling equity options contracts to hedge funds and collecting those premiums on a weekly/monthly basis :)

I worked there as an usher for a few months in the early 70's. Got canned for letting people into the clubhouse without paying the 25 cents admission! the big event I remember was when Joe Louis came through with his entourage one night...quite the gentleman it seemed.

Remember it well. I was a groom there in 19060 and 61. Opening nite in 1961 I screwed up and was on the track before the race was over. When the race was over, the grooms had to gather up the dogs.
