According to the Wikipedia (which often contains inaccurate information) article at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captive_white_tigers , Rajah never arrived at Crandon Park Zoo, presumably because of Princess's death the week before.

Does anybody know what happened to the male white tiger which was scheduled to arrive on Christmas day 1970 at the Crandon Park Zoo, after Princess's death?

I was just looking at articles about the Crandon Park Zoo in the google.news.archive. There is a newspaper picture of Minnie carrying one of her cubs. I also found a photograph of Lucy Nielsen playing with an 8 month old chimpanzee named Samantha at the Crandon Park Zoo which appeared in the Reading Eagle on Aug. 4, 1970, and in another paper on July 27, 1970.

One of my kind contributors has submitted a few photos of Princess and I hope to upload them in the near future. My laptop that contains the photos has a virus right now and once I resolve that problem I'll get to the Princess photos.

I should have addressed my message to Lucy asking whether she has any photos of Princess the white tiger or a postcard picture.

The Crandon Park Zoo recieved a pair of baby elephants I think in 1967 from the government of India as compensation for a white tiger earmarked for Crandon Park which died at Kanpur railway station en route. That one was a male. Lucy do you have a postcard picture of Princess or any other pictures of her? Paul

William Bergstrom was the owner of Dixie. He was the founder of ACES, Air Carrier Engine Service which is now Aerothrust , corp.. My father worked there from 1955 til his death in 1993. He knew Mr. Bergstrom very well. As a child I remember going to the zoo just to see Dixie play with that tire. As my father told me, Dixie was alway friendly and happy around Mr. Bergstrom. That changed after Mr. Berstroms death. Apparently, when Mr. Berstrom passed on in the late 60's, Dixie became unmanagable for the family which in turn donated Dixie to Crandon Park. Til my fathers death in 1993, every year on Christmas eve he would place flowers on his my uncles tombstone, my little cousin, both his mother and fathers final resting place, and finally he would stop and place some flowers on Mr. Berstroms gravesite. He had lots of respect for that man.

On the corner of 107th Ave and Bird Road there was a man who owned an elephant named Dixie. I would take my children there and they came up with the idea that the elephant was their's! I don't remember the man's name but it was a large property and the elephant roamed around freely. When he died the family donated the elephant to the Crandon Park Zoo. When we would go my children would say, "There is our elephant. There is Dixie." The elephant eventually died, I think, of foot rot (?) To this day they think of Dixie as having been our elephant.

Oh Dearest Lucy,
If you are ever on this board again, please contact me. When I was a very little boy before I started going to school, my mom would bring me almost every day. This was probably between 1971-1974. We became such a fixture, that one day one of the cat handlers asked my mom if I could come back & play w/ two new tiger cubs. This is one of my earliest & most treasuered memories. I remember the lady had long blonde hair in a ponytail. I also remember seeing her several times on The Skipper CHuck show, that wasn't you was it?

I have very fond memories of the Crandon Park Zoo. It was a small zoo and animals were in cages, but it really was beautiful. I used to love to ride the little train and does anyone remember the pot of gold near the back of the zoo? That and the train were my favorite things! What great memories!

WOW. I REMEMBER THIS ZOO. EVEN THOUGH I WAS BORN IN 69 AND WAS VERY YOUNG WHEN I WENT THERE I STILL REMEMBER THE TRAIN AND THE CAROUSEL. I MISS ALOT OF THE OLD MIAMI SOMETIMES I STILL WISH I WAS STILL LIVING BACK IN THE DAY.

We used to go to the Crandon Park Zoo when I was little, before they built the Metrozoo.
