1964 - Rascal House sign on Collins Avenue (A1A), Sunny Isles

Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles, Florida

The sign looks a little beat up, perhaps from a hurricane in 1964. Our beloved Jahn's Ice Cream store is in the next shopping center down the street and their sign on Collins Avenue is visible in the background.

Freddy Massaro had a place next door called Beachside Marios. I came to hear the stories about the old days and he had plenty of them about how he started at the door at the newport and how Wolfie Cohen a member of the infamous Murder Inc did good. Don't know about murder Inc? well they were the toughest jews that mob came to when things needed to be handled and they did just that. Wolfie turned out becaome one of most caring people in south florida all the people that worked for him he gave the chances to own their own house and that was a big deal back then.. also Wolfie didn't layoff people when things got slow... I bet he could teach a few things to these schools about running a business. If by my writing you think I love this place... well you're right. I love the idea that a place like this exsisted and that sadly it's just a memory. Before my parents passed I would take them all the time to the rascal always pulling them throught he exit and having so many people wonder who I was or who I knew. One waitress even said something to the effect "look at you coming in here like you own the place no line for you no sir not with you son who's this big shot

Yes, this was a great restaurant. I beleive there was another one in Biscayne Bld.
My niece worked in the Miami Beach place. We loved the basket with the small cakes, we took them home. We had to wait in line. We lived in near Edison Sr. High in the 70's back then. All we have now is memories. If we could bring time back. Really enjoyed this pics.

Oh Yeah! I was also one of those that stood in a line, (sometimes all the way back to the parking lot) to get into this Rascal House for the best dinner at the best price in town. I used to go there with a boyfriend of mine between 1972 and 1976. He loved the stuffed cabbage, everything on the menu was good. The baskets of rolls were awesome. If you went for breakfast they would bring a basket of minature danishes,OMG! Yes they did have the best cheesecake. I do remember the Jahn's ice cream parlor. Visited there many time too.

No matter what time of the day or night, there was always a waiting line to get in there. Half the fun of going there was standing in line, listening to the elderly Jewish folks who lived in nearby hotels and ate almost every meal at Rascal House. The waitresses all wore those fanned out handkerchiefs on their shoulders and would only dole out single pats of butter when asked. I've never had cheesecake like this anywhere else and have spent my entire adult life trying to recreate their recipe in my own kitchen. Long after we moved away, when we came back to Miami, we always had to go to Rascal House and bring back whole cheesecakes for ourselves and our families. Sadly, I believe they have closed down. The last of that genre as far as I know.
