1940s - Pan American aircraft at Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport, Florida

From the state archives: "Three of the many Pan Am planes operating out of Miami, are shown on the loading ramp before the terminal building of the airport. One of the new four-engine clippers is shown flanked by the two-engine clippers which have been the backbone of the Latin American Division air fleet in recent years. The four-engine planes are replacing the slower, twin-engine models as fast as delivery can be secured from the factory."

Sources I've seen indicate that most DC-4s (the 4-engine ship at center) were built as USAAF or USN C-54s and converted to passenger-carrying configuration after being released by the military quickly after WWII. Only some 100 of the 1100 or so airframes were built as new DC-4s after the war, since faster, pressurized Constellations were coming off the line and DC-6 models were in final development. Pan Am's DC-4s were nearly all converted C-54s. Photos of the right side of such aircraft show the wider, cargo-compatible rear doors reflecting their military cargo background. Larry Roberts
