14th Street Causeway, Miami, Florida


According to Burl, this tiny marina was located next to the 14th Street Causeway (now MacArthur Causeway) on the north side where the Miami Herald building was constructed years later. This was a 16-foot Chris Craft runabout hull that he installed a Lincoln Zephyr 12-cylinder engine into.

This image was taken at what was called "Barney's Bayshore Boat Rentals" I used to live in a little fishing shack built into the frame work of that sign (E.B. Elliott)

This was just north of the MacArthur Causeway. On the other (south) side of the Causeway was Belcher Oil docks. The address for Barneys was on Herald Plaza. It was not called that at the time though I can't remember the street name then. There was also a Bait and Tackle shop there called "The Shrimp Spot", I had worked there on occassion too.

Jeff, I remember those signs. In 1959 one of the billboards said "Cuba is now Free, Come Visit....Fidel Castro". A year later Castro announced that Cuba was now communist and the sign disappeared.
Just north of these boats is where WQAM built it's transmission tower.

Take notice of the small "E.B. Elliot Co." sign in the upper right hand corner of the picture...

This was one of a number of billboards that lined the bayside property between the County Causeway and the Venetian Causeway on the future Miami Herald site; facing East as traffic headed to the mainland.

Jantzen Swimsuits, Admiral Television and Cliquot Club Ginger Ale were three I recall seeing in old photos of the area...

Burl Grey here saying the operator of this little marina was "Barney", something like "Barney's boats".
My younger brother remembered that name.

If anyone knows about the old auto's Lincoln Zephyer with 12 cylinder engines... they will recognize the gear shift lever. I bought an old car and transplanted the entire engine including the clutch and gears. It's placed a little too far toward the front of the boat creating a problem when I tried to get it going. It was hard to get it out of first gear because the forward motion would spin the prop in the opposite direction so that shifting into second gear was almost impossible.
I tied the boat too tight at high tide and when the tide went out it wrecked the boat which I then abandonded... A stupid thing to do from the beginning :-) But great fun!

I may have misslet you on that because it was on the North side of the MacArthur causeway which is 14th Street, (not the Venetian causeway which is a block or so North.
