1971 - the northwest corner of NW 67 Avenue and the Palmetto Expressway north of Miami Lakes

North of Miami Lakes, Florida


Large sign on the corner is pointing to the north where the Country Club of Miami is. NW 67th Avenue is in the foreground and the access road for the Palmetto westbound is on the other side of the intersection.

This corner has long been occupied by a Burger King on the corner with a L-shaped strip shopping center behind it. Of course Burger King removed the shade trees that were initially planted to somewhat beautify the intersection.

Don, I don't know what happened in that area. But, I drive by that Burger King everyday. Those trees that were hatracked or removed are doing quite well. They actually provide a focal point and make the Burger King "seem" inviting.

Terri, I remember Big Ed's BBQ on the corner of Palm Avebnue and about 9th street. He wasn't too keen on serving the new arrivals if you know what I mean. Back in the late 70's I would put up with his dirty looks and his wife's condescending attitude just to taste his freshly fried hush puppies. I would actually pay for a bbq meal just top have a BOX full of hush puppies. I was a mere child, but unless Big Ed's had his better days, I don't remember the chicken being so delicious; fresh out of the microwave if you ask me. The hush pupppies, now those were a different story.

This photo does look earlier than 71. we moved to Miami Lakes in the summer of 1964, and I remember there were only 2 overpasses on the Palmetto south of 154th street, 1 at 103rd st. & the other at the Tamiami Trail. south Florida was a great place to grow up back then. I could leave the keys in my car with the windows rolled down, & everything would be there when I returned. Oh what was !!

We moved to PSN in 1971 and were/are very familiar with the area. These photos seem earlier than '71.

My father ran the Valet Parking Concession at the Country Club of Miami from when it opened in '61 to '74. I parked cars there from '67-'72. Jackie Gleason lived there--as did many other rich & famous people. I wish I would have had a Kodak Instamatic--for I would have some collection--for I saw and was able to know so many famous people. During The National Airlines Pro Am one year--I shook hands with Joe Louis & Jackie Robinson just a few hours apart! It was just a job--second nature really seeing famous people all the time--but that day has always stood out for me....

Yes, I remember that torch, I was just a kid and I remember my father trying to enter the Palmetto expy from a dead stop..Whew! was that dangerous.When they removed the torch they threw it behind the water treatment plant in PSN. I always thought that was kinda sad.

Terri: I'm positive on the year because the photos are dated along with dated legal paperwork. I hate posting anything without a date or at least the decade. I do remember Big Ed's BBQ, and the Riding Academy is mentioned under the photo of NW 67th Avenue looking south into Miami Lakes. Now, do you remember that when Palm Springs North first opened there was another exit and entrance ramp off of the Palmetto between NW 67th Avenue and the Big Bend - it was a divided roadway into PSN and there was a huge bronze globe on a pedestal in the median of the roadway with an eternal gas flame inside the open framed globe. That lasted a year or two and then they closed that exit/entrance and made everyone go down to 67th Avenue to get on the Palmetto. Don

I lived in this area(Palm Springs North)since 7/61. Are you sure the photos are from 1971? Looks like earlier but I'm not sure.LOVE THIS SITE. does anyone remember Big Eds BBQ on Palm Ave in Hialeah? or the riding academy in Miami Lakes?

I'm sorry, I didn't adequately explain that. What you see in the photo was either flattened or relocated (probably the former) when the property was developed. However, five or six shade trees, probably black olives but maybe oaks, were planted on the 67th Avenue frontage and along NW 167th Street leading to the Palmetto. They only lasted a few years before Burger King either hatracked them to death or just removed them so that vehicle drivers could see the restaurant better from the roadways. You know, the typical good neighbor attitude that's prevalent down here. Don
