NW 36th Street, Miami, Florida


Photo looking west from about NW 40th Avenue. Eastern's hangars and water tower on the left side. Just to the right of the base of the water tower is a billboard (probably Eastern) with a Constellation image and a slogan stating most frequent service to California. In the foreground before the base of the water tower is a sign stating "Golf." On the right is a Webster billboard for Delta C&S with an image of a DC-7 stating "Delta C&S DC-7 Golden Crown Fastest Service" on the left with "Chicago 4 hrs. Non-Stop" and "Atlanta 2 hrs. 9 min." on the right side. On the bottom left of the sign is an arrow pointing left stating "3.4 mile West"

Prior to Eastern & prior to WWII there was no buildings on the NE corner of the airport, and I can recall seeing the Shell Oil yellow biplane parked there. During WWII buildings were built and I believe Vultee Vibrators were built. Eastern tookover that part of the airport after the war....mlm

Just a comment for those not familiar with MIA history.. back then, this section of NW 36 WAS the airport. The buildings you think of today as MIA didn't exist back then. The runway be parallel and just south of NW 36 St. Some of these buildings are still standing, but are hangers and support buildings for smaller carriers.

I may have painted that billboard because I worked for Webster Outdoor Advertising from 1946 to about 1960.
There was a water tower like that just before the airport going West on 36 st on the North side. If that's it, I also painted that.
