All of the cupolas on top of every Howard Johnson's Restaurant and Motor Lodge were manufactured by Jones Shutter Products, owned by family friend Herbert S. Jones, in Miami and later Hialeah, Florida. Herb Jones and Howard Johnson were good longtime friends and golfing buddies whenever Howard was in the Miami area.
It appears that the owner of this Howard Johnson's painted the cupola blue when they were originally manufactured with turquoise fiberglass panels that showed the color at night when the light bulbs were on.
