The area west of the Palmetto and south of W. 68th Street is still undeveloped and the hospital was about the only thing built west of the Palmetto at this point in time except for individual homes, ranches, a church or two, etc. The land where the hospital was built was formerly a strawberry farm owned by the Klaus Sjogren family who also owned the u-pick strawberry fields east of the Palmetto and south of W. 68th Street before they were developed with residential single-family homes and a ton of apartment and condo buildings further to the south.
