The Turnpike Drive-In Theatre was located on the west side of NW 27th Avenue just north of Master's Field, a huge military airfield, northern boundary at the canal which is at NW 127th Street. The Westview Country Club is visible on the middle right and lower right sides of the photo.

My father was stationed at master's Field for several years. In fact that is why they ended up living here. Both my brother and I were born in Jackson memorial hospital. We lived in Opa Locka at the time until they bought one of those little flat roofed houses in East Hialeah. Just to the west of Master's Field is Amelia Earhart Field which was a naval airbase attached to Masters Field. There used to be a gate between the two so supplies and even airplanes could be exchanged.

There is another drive in south of this one on the east side of 27th Avenue at 68th Street.. I remember that we went to movies at all three of the Drive-Ins along 27th Avenue. There was also the Golden Glades twin theatre north of 826.

I remember a group of us were driving along 826 past the theater just as the Barbarella strip scene was showing, so we pulled over to watch. Jane Fonda was sexy, too bad she had to commit treason.

I remember this. As a kid in the early/mid 70's, I used to live in the Nile Garden Apartments (that square outline between the airfield and the drive-in). Sometimes my parents and I would grab the cooler, some folding beach chairs and a few cans of OFF and sit under the pine trees that made up the tree line that separated the apartment parking lot from the drive in and watch the movies. :)

Sadly the drive in is now an auto flea market, and Nile Gardens is one of the worse rated slums around. Amazing how much can change in just 30-40 years.
