According to an article in Miami New Times on a photagrapher who snaps photos of vintage buildings around Miami...and what I reconfirmed through the street view photo on Google Maps, the building at 7957 NE 2nd Avenue is still barely in existence, delapidated - but with the Royal Castle signage still visible on the terrazzo flooring at the entrance.

Yes, 7-11 stores were originally open air. So was the Ranch House drive-in on NW 7th Avenue and 54th Street (later a Burger King location) and Lee's Fruit Juice Bar on Collins Avenue next to the Di Lido Hotel and just North of Wolfie's Lincoln Road.

Later regulations on food safety and perhaps our desire for air conditioning forced many open air places to close in.

Burger King, McDonald's and Carvel were walk-up stand early-on... not open air, as they did have service windows.

Open to the air extablishments were common back then and all the way into the 70's. Besides Royal Castle others that I remember included a Lum's on Seventh Ave. in N. Miami and believe it or not a 7-11. The 7-11 had like a garage door that would open during their hours and close for overnight. In the summer us kids knew better than to buy most any candy from 7-11, for obvious reasons.

Chuck, I've seen them on Enay from time to time!

Very interesting to know that the original restaurants were open in the front! That must have been so cool. I think McDonalds did something similar, originally, as you had to walk up to order.

I'm looking for a Royal Castle coffee mug with the RC logo. Anybody have one to sell?
