1956 - the Champagne Steak House

Dade County, Florida

Thank you to Stan Meade for contributing this great old image. Does anyone know exactly where it was? It looks like Biscayne Boulevard to me with the Royal Palm out front.

Obviously, some pics ARE copyrighted. I have purchased limited, and "endless," usage numerous times for various needs. But pics like those above, are very unlikely copyrighted.

The majority of the photographs on the Internet are NOT copyrighted. "Implied copyright" won't hold up in court.

This also rolls into "public art." A film or TV show is free to film ANY art work that is visible from public property. An artist cannot say, "You cannot show my statue in your film." Won't hold up. I know.

Also, if say, a documentary wants to show footage from an old feature film, for instance...as long as it is filmed showing on a TV screen (cable, DVD, etc) or projected onto another screen within the film, it is legal.

A photo is NOT automatically copyrighted, if that is what you are saying. If I take a picture and post it on the Internet, someone else CAN use it.

It must be copyrighted legally.

What are you going on about?

Even original graphic designs must be copyrighted. Etc.

WRONG! A photo [or any other artistic or intelluctual property] is copyrighted upon its inception by its maker according to US copyright law under the term "implied copyright". Anyone can assign their ownership or copyrights if they have formally registered a previous copyright notice - and even implied copyright is still protected under the law.

Grabbing something off the internet under the false pretext of "it's public domain" either doesn't understand or doesn't respect copyright law or what public domain actually is. Yes, if no copyright is noted or credited it may very well be in the public domain, but NOT ALL items full under that heading.

This is why there are anti-piracy laws that have come down very hard on file sharing of all types.

But then again, we live in a world where people are so blatantly selfish they'll put themselves up above the law, against common courtesy and against basic human respect. Those people will not change, no matter what proof you offer them that their behavior is not right.

In fact, they'll often insult you, curse you, threaten you and demean you because they can't face their own lack of humility, decency or morals.

You can "buy" a bunch of photos, but if you do not officially copyright them, anyone can use them.

Images must have an official copyrighted license. If not, I believe that they become public domain on the Internet. There are many free stock image sites, and of course, those that cost money.
