Thank you to Vanessa Bechter for contributing this great old image of her mom and dad's Dairy Queen before they added Pappee's Restaurant next to it. The Dairy Queen was on the west side of E. 4th Avenue and this photo is looking north on E. 4th Avenue.

I had my first Job at Dairy Queen in Opelaka. My dad owned the store.

I worked at Dick's Pet and Garden across the street in the 60s. An Italian family from up north opened a bakery next to the pet shop and we would go in there and get a warm fresh roll and then get a shake from the Dairy Queen and have one of the best lunches.

I lived at 780 e 44st from 1950 to 1957, we used to shop at all the stores in the area,,little did I know I would marry the local doctors daughter next to the dairy queen,,dr jack roy was at this location for years,,he lived with us the last 10 years of his life with us here in lady lake,fl he past away two years ago at the age of 99,,he was real kind hearted man, he sadly missed,,tim vinzant

Bob Buckland - there's a name I haven't heard in 45-50 years. I lived at 225 E 44th - just about in line with you & Bill but on 44th vs you on 45th. In addition to Woody's 5 & dime, there was a sporting goods store a couple doors down where we used to get sling-shots, BB's & baseball stuff. My friend who sent me this link used to work at Dick's Pet Shop in our high school years. Stephen - you the lived somewhere near the Marsh's - Donny & Cheree on 43rd,..& the name of the little Mom & Pop store was Medford's.

The laundry is still there but the corner drug store is now a locksmith business called Wong's and at the rear there's a small car radio/alarm business that fronts E 41th St. Food Fair is long gone and replaced by a Sedano's Supermarket (Spanish chain of grocery stores throughout Dade and Broward Counties). Jerry's & Joe's is no longer at this spot but grew and now there are like 10 locs throughout Hialeah and Miami-Dade County. They've been in business for more than 50 yrs. I love their NY-style pizza. The Schwinn bike shop is still in the same spot.

I lived down the street from this DQ on 43rd st. I used to buy models at Woody's. There was a laundry across the street and a Columbia Bike shop on the other side. Down the street was Jerry and Joes Pizza and Food Fair. Also the Schwinn Shop. What was the name of the grocery across from Woody's? It starts with an "m" but I can't quite remember it.

Oh Yeah,....We'd get a Blizzerd and go across the street to the pet shop or to woody's 5&10....we lived at 461 E.40Th street, the same street as Food Fair...ate a million pizza's from Jerry and Joe's Italian take out between the bike shop and the drug store on the corner of 4th ave and 41 st......wonder what it all looks like now???..lols GA

Hi Bob, I remember this DQ. I loved going there, it seemed so far away from our house on 28th Street. And I remember you from HHS, class of '66.

This DQ was one of my favorite as my grandfather would either drive from Miami to our place on E. 45th on Saturday's to visit and would take my brother and me here for an ice cream. Sometimes we would go back with him to Miami to spend the night and go to breakfast and church on Sunday. I always got a chocholate malt milkshake; remember when you could drink them easily with a strw?

I remember being a kid in the '60s, going to a Dairy Queen that only had a walk-up window, no dining area.
