1970 - aerial view of Miami Lakes south of the Palmetto and area to north of the Palmetto

Big Bend of the Palmetto Expressway, Dade County

In this aerial image we can see that the old dangerous grade level entrance/exit road to the Palmetto Expressway has been closed due to NW 169th Street now connecting Palm Springs North to NW 67th Avenue. NW 67th Avenue in the upper right corner jogs westward to NW 68th Avenue. The only way to Broward County was to drive through the Country Club of Miami north of NW 186th Street on Bob-o-Link Drive which then connected to Flamingo Road at the Broward County line. There used to be a private airstrip just east of Bob-o-Link Drive and north of NW 186th Street with several private aircraft based there.

Development has not yet filled the north side of the Palmetto at NW 67th Avenue with shopping centers, gas stations and fast food restaurants. Not all the home lots around Loch Lomond have homes on them yet. The Loch Ness and Windmill Gate sections of Miami Lakes are still vacant except for the former Miami Lakes Riding Academy on the east side of NW 67th Avenue where horses were boarded for area residents.
