One thing we enjoyed as kids growing up in Hialeah was all the open space for us to explore or just get away to for some solitude. This image depicts West 49th Street with very little development west of W. 12th Avenue and now it is totally paved over with stores and parking lots.

The section labeled Hiaheah City Dump...that's due west of my neighborhood at 1021 W. 55th Place, Palm Springs. Back in 1956ish, we kids used to play in that field, which still had a silo and an abandoned farmhouse with no roof left on it. That property later became Lovell Homes.

Yes, he was a Hialeah City Councilman for many years and was probably instrumental in getting the land set aside for a public park. I knew Vic when he sold homes for the Lovell Brothers when they built Palm Springs Estates west of 12th Avenue to 16th Avenue and between W. 59th Street and the canal in the photo. Their model homes were on W. 12th Lane between 58th and 59th Street - 8 models (4 facing 4 on the street) and I'd see Vic almost every day while delivering the Miami News. The Lovells subscribed because their offices were in one of the models and Vic also got a copy. He was one hell of a nice guy - I was 13 at the time.
