Air Florida did not have a single leased gate at Miami International Airport. They used the airport's common-use gates, assigned by the Gate Control section of the Aviation Department, instead of paying exorbitant per use fees to an airline with a long-term leased gate.
Assigning gates to Air Florida was controlled chaos because they often did last minute gate changes right before a flight arrived and after the aircraft was on the gate they would change the departure flight number, departure time and destination two or three times, totally confusing the passengers who would have to make a long trek to another concourse, only to find out upon arrival that their gate had been changed again and most likely to a totally different concourse. We operated the Flight Information Display System that posted the flights and it was chaotic as hell sometimes when their planned gate usage fell all apart.
