I worked at this restaurant during my years going to the U. of Miami, from 1954-58. I worked on the evenings on Friday and Saturdays. Though I had been trained as a bartender and worked hotel resorts along the East Coast during the summers, I was a busboy at The Dixie Belle, and I looked forward to work because I got a free meal and was able to leave relatively early so I had time for my studies. Mrs. Sherrard was awfully nice to me, but Mr. Sherrard was a reticent man and spoke to me only occasionally. I was given a job as bartender, but the late long hours affected my studies, so I returned to busboying tacles. The waitresses were very kind and understanding. They tipped me well! Lenny Emmanuel

My brother was named after Jerry Sherrard, God bless them both! (Debbie Erwin)

I grew up right across US1 from the Dixie Belle Inn. The day that it burned down, we watched helplessly from the railroad tracks along US1. The bus boys were scurrying to salvage chairs and a piano while the building was up in flames..... a very sad day :(

I ate here many times with my family. My father knew Mr Sherrard. We would takes buses from there to go to football games and the men (my father) carried canes that unscrew and had vials of whiskey in them. Mr S was Irish and St Paddy's was a big day at the restaurant. Mr S always dressed up in a kelly green suit with waistcoat and hat. He carried a saucer size watch on a gold chain in his pocket and all us kids would ask him the time and everyone would laugh. Those were good days. We were regulars so my parents knew a lot of people. We went every Friday night. I loved it there and Mr S. was always kind to me. Happy Days.

Frank, thank you for that information about Sherrard's and your mom. It's personal information like this that really adds to the photos on this site and lets people know a little more about what is depicted which benefits all of us in our historical knowledge.

this was a restaurant and lounge owned by jerry sherrard. my mom dorsey baptiste worked there as manager/hostess for many years till one afternoon there was a fire outside near a dumpster which they thought they got all out but it had gotten up under the roof ledge and before they knew it the whole place burned to the ground. it was very close to sunniland shopping center on dixie hwy. my mom told us lots of stories about working there. she liked it a lot. i could tell she was very fond of everyone there and missed them.

Where was this place, anyone know? A Miami Herald mention never got more specific than "down near Perrine on U.S. 1"

I remember eating here as a kid. It burned down shortly after. My main memory was this is where I got my first taste of apple butter.

Another angle post card is here: http://beach-high.com/dixie.html

I know there's a Dixie Belle strip mall there now. I bet no one there has any idea this is where the name came from.
