Did the lighthouse operate as a lighthouse, albeit private?, how “bright” was the light?

When Rick DiFranco & I got our first (store bought) surfboards we wanted to try them. The problem, it was flat as a lake! We went to the jetty at low tide so we might be able to catch some wakes from the fishing boats. I remember looking up at the windows and wondering just who might be eating there watching toe two teenagers try to surf on "nothing".......

My Dad's bakery supplied all the deserts to this restaurant. I remember when they filled a movie there. We also had dinner there many times and I also feed the turtles.

Not a fan of the sea turtles in a tank for entertainment.

Too bad they never rebuilt the restaurant.

The Lighthouse (according to a Miami News article of Dec. 22, 1967) caught fire in the early morning hours of that Friday morning and the first alarm went out around 2:29 AM.

A former owner and manager was S.D. Macris.

The entire building was destroyed, killing the four huge sea turtles in their tank. According to the article, the fireman found the water in the tank "steaming" and the turtles dead. The tank was also used at times to house live lobsters and stone crabs.

I have many fond memories of the restaurant. Glass aquariums and of course the turtles. My favorite part of the decor was the full relief carved panel depicting an underwater scene. This panel separated the bar from the waiting area. I was so sad when it burned down. I stopped by the scene a couple of days later to find the charred remains of sea turtles who perished in the fire. A friend of mine and I collected some sheets of copper, much of which was stuck with tar. We sold the scrap for a case of beer.

I loved feeding the turtles as others did... Then, after dinner going out through the transom doors onto the concrete deck overlooking the seawall. One of my favorite childhood places.

My father, Stan Rose, managed the restaurant in 60's until it burned down. It had been purchased by The Union News Company in NY who also owned the Stagecoach Restaurant in Miami.
As I remember, the restaurant burned down due to electrical fire in the Lighthouse on top of structure. It could not be rebuilt because the area was a park by then.

Who were the owners of the lighthouse?
Pam 03-Mar-2012 19:52
My Uncle John, who was my godfather, was one of the 3 original owners ... My family had many delightful Sunday dinners there in a seni-private area...and yes, we fed the turtles and got to visit the kitchen from tiime to time. In the early days, it was the place for many famous people to dine. Love the picture which I believe it's a post card from the reataurant.

I went there as a child. My father knew the owners and I got to feed the giant turtles all the left over lettuce.

When I was in Middle School all the kids used to hand out at Haulover Beach and pier. On the pier we used to get a pretty good hamburger and french fries. I remember when the Lighthouse Rest. burnt down as well. It was a land mark in that area, this picture brought back alot of memories.

They served the best Red Snapper Bon Femme and I never found a seafood restaurant that had the same or close to the same.
