The word hunt takes all its sense with this aurora seen this morning of 4 november 2003 !!! At the time of the impact of the solar winds at ~1:00am ( all local ), the sky was completely overcast here, but the impact shakes me nevertheless :)
I look at this site http://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/goeseastconusir.html and I see one breach in the clouds to about ~100km to the north of Quebec, in middle of the Park of the Laurentides , I decide to go there and when I arrived at the km 99 , the sky was completly clear !!!
A green aurora with some white rays is there but it decrease to the point where one doesn't see more nearly the aurora ! Me and Jean Chiasson, begins to think that our chances died because it's passed 3:30am and there is always anything but we said that to 4:30 if nothing happens , we leaves at home.
The magnetosphere decides to give us a gift when tilting southwards and let the electric charged particules enter to hit the gases in the atmosphere ... near 4:20, the northern lights begins to take of the size when the red begins to be visible, YES :)
I don't remember to have seen one aurora as the one there, a very powerful red aurora , with big white rays going up until the zenith. The translucent red have an intensity between clear and dark, it was beautiful !!! Nearly 5:15 , the northern lights began to decrease in intensity as the dawn begin in strenght.
This image don't show how tall was this aurora , but the aurora in this image was at zenith ( over my head ) !!!
What a magic show that are the northern lights :)
