Birds are so amazing in how they perch! This pic shows the hind-toe well. Now I have a new "trip" to follow! I became fascinated with birdie hind-toes last year with the winter birds at Dutton Fields. Now - tonight for the first time (!), I finally figured it out! It is not only the birds with special hind toes (like the Dutton winter birds and especially nuthatches), but maybe all passerine birds where the hind toe allows them to grasp branches. Did I say "grasp"??? Ever think about an opposable thumb??? Whew!!!
