Overview From the Elevated Walkway

Bethlehem, PA

After posting a few of the images from my quick stop last October in Bethlehem to see Bethlehem Steel, I realized it probably should have its own gallery. Here you can see a view, shot from the elevated walkway showing both the steel mill and the development around it. Notice the brand new walkways, lawns, buildings across the street and sculptures. Also notice on the left the walkway that goes the length of the whole mill. About midway up on the far right side, you can see someone in a blue shirt and orange tour hat. Note that vegetation has been planted along the walkway and there are benches and signs explaining the history of the mill. There are lots of other buildings that I did not have time to explore. I do plan to go back. To give you some idea of the size, I was standing about half way down the length of the plant and walkway when I shot this photo. It is definitely my kind of place and I am glad someone decided to make this into an attraction instead of just letting it rot, or worse - tearing it down altogether.

No doubt about it being an iconic structure and incredibly photogenic, but I have a much better idea for it's fate. Instead of turning it into some sort of attraction to what once was, or a centerpiece of a revitalized condominium community, how about we turn it into a steel mill and produce steel and jobs and a sense of national pride once more? Crazy idea, I suppose.

You show us so much here and it is all absolutely amazing.
The amazing detail and color, tremendous subject matter and a sky that really tops this off perfectly
Love it

Amazing perspective of this attraction. I imagine you had a hoot photographing it Dan and seeing your results in HDR are superb. BV

a staggering scale evident here, and certainly a rewarding overview...must have been a lot of jobs lost upon closure of the plant...the re-vitalization is encouraging though...V

Excellent overview of what looks to be an enormous steel mill. And a very good idea to preserve this, and even turn into an attraction. V.

Great overview. I can see now that this is a attraction. I love this. In Germany there are a few of these places, where it's a Delight to photograph.
