Full Of.......

..... some more so than others!!! Why this choice of shot? Hopefully it serves as a point in response to the 'guest' comment below on my previous shot. Whilst I have no objection to negative feedback I do get frustrated by inaccuracies which 'guest' has been prone to more frequently than not.

"I don't know about this one - it's nothing new, but it is not a bad snapshot. This is a private comment Dave, as I noticed you are really boasting about your votes, comments, etc. Ask yourself a couple of things - is it the same people over and over commenting on my stuff? If you took out the repeat customers, are you left with a lot of favorable responses? And are my galleries _really_ as good as some of the "popular" galleries on PBase? And finally, ask yourself, are you really going that extra mile to get that shot, or are these just easy shots *anyone* with a camera and CS can do? Do you find yourself hiking two miles at 5:00 in the morning to get a spot for that glorious 15 minutes of light? Are you willing to sit in the mud for an hour for that bitchin' sunset? You might be, who knows, but shots like this say no. Remember, what other people think of your work is meaningless, including myself...after all, Ashlee Simpson has a triple platinum album. Yours, Jim Beam PS - as for the all the stories behind your photos, if you have to explain a photograph to someone, you are wildly missing the point of photography."
The above was added to http://www.pbase.com/djwixx/image/89401005

In response to some of your points....................
Where do you get the idea that I boast about comments and votes? I have a most voted gallery simply as a mechanism to show a snapshot of what the pbase community thinks. It means nothing and has no merits other than a way to choose sample shots. Do I know that many of the comments are from repeat customers? Yes, but they're not customers they're online friends, and we take the time to encourage each other, and I think we're all honest enough to appreciate that some shots merit more attention than others, or none at all. Would I have many favourable responses if their responses weren't considered? Given that I have about half a dozen frequent visitors and possible voters, my most voted gallery would probably show the same results. I also don't comment whether I vote, because I don't want reciprocal votes. I also have a very small number of people I post comments on, due to time constraints, so again the number of comments I get in return is limited. Also, if you look at my popular galleries (!!), I don't have any so I'm not sure what your point is or what you are looking at!! Am I going the extra mile? More than likely not, but I have a full time job and a family, so my time is limited. Would I take the steps you describe? Yes I would. Why do I add descriptions to all my pictures? Simple, it involves the people I know in my life and makes sharing my little adventure that much more enjoyable.
ADDENDUM: The kind of photography you discuss is the kind of photography that gets published, by photographers who are used to advertise camera equipment. At what point did you consider me to be capable of being added to that kind of list? I should be honoured that you have such a narrow view of photography and such a narrow view of the capabilities required to reach those lofty heights!!!!!

On a final note, and I think this is an important one - I find it curious the time you take to make pointless comments! In the forums I describe myself as an unqualified snapper and in my galleries I describe myself as a snapper. Are you such a failed artist or photographer that you choose to belittle someone who already qualifies themselves as unqualified? The more I think about the shit you spew the more I laugh!!

"Jim Beam" a.k.a. "Guest" is an idiot, but then I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know. That's one of the reasons that I have "guest" comments set to "display after vetting" on mine; other PBase members who put up their own work can say what they like, but anonymous trolls can be consigned to a richly deserved oblivion. As I'll note in the gallery comment (when I reach the end of the shots, which may not be tonight) I really enjoy reading commentary on PBase shots, particularly landscape shots. They provide some background and context to the images, and help take the viewer there. They don't substitute for the shot, but merely supplement it and enhance it.
Guest 02-Dec-2007 20:10
Here here, well said!!!!
Guest 27-Nov-2007 22:18
Bloody well said sir. "Guest" (now there's an inspired moniker) needs to get out more. Or get laid. Or get crapped on from a great height. Or indeed all three. In fact, I would pay good money for THAT photo.
Doug Kessler27-Nov-2007 15:19
Guest can just bite me!
I like your photos, Dave.
Jim Larkin27-Nov-2007 05:53
Let me tell you something...That whole "If you have to explain your shot" thing is absolute crap. I could come on here and post a sunset everyday. I could post naked pictures of my wife, call it art, and get a million views. I could post nothing but bird pictures. I don't because that isn't my thing. If it's "Guests" thing then he or she should do it and shut up. I thoroughly enjoy photojounalism. I take my shot and then I write my words. A lot of my shots don't mean as much without the story behind them. It's what I enjoy and if you don't then don't comment, but don't be cruel. Dave, keep on keeping on my friend. I really enjoy your stuff, though I may not comment everyday, I check it every day.
Bob Floyd26-Nov-2007 21:22
Ignore them, sir. You are much better than a lot of so called "photographers" who rise to the top of the Popular Galleries on a weekly and daily basis off the strength of vote trading and e-mail vote spamming. Your images a well conceived, composed, exposed and processed. In short, you are more talented than a number of so called "pros" I have known who make their living behind a camera. The comments of a lone individual too cowardly to come out from behind the vale if anonymity are not worthy of your attention. Pray, continue with your "happy snapping" and I dare say all those commenting here (and many more besides) will be more than happy to continue enjoying your excellent work.

Poor 'Guest'. Getting up at 5am....stomping through the mud.
Then a horse shits on him and his camera....ROTFLMAO!
Mrs Boik 26-Nov-2007 09:17
I would say that you're enjoying yourself Dave, a little joust, like wrestling with Muffy! (only she was lovely!)

I'm not 'qualified' to comment on your 'snaps' professionally, but to me, it's a diary of the life of the Wickes family over in the USA, where I can look now and then and keep up with what you've all been up to, not lose touch completely if you know what I mean. And along the way I can see some of your thought processes and appreciate the artistic side of you, which we all knew you had. Don't mean to gush, it's just the way it is.

xx

I don't know why you bothered answering one of the many guests we have, but your shot is very moving.
laine8225-Nov-2007 21:00
I always seem to enter after the event & can never quite figure out what has occured....
Less rhetoric & more shooting ( pictures only ) is needed !!
Interesting shot, Dave :>))
Jen Bixler25-Nov-2007 20:32
Here we go again! Wonder if this is the infamous MOG?

I can imagine "guest" being able to wait 2 hours for a shot or go out at dawn to capture one of their no doubt perfect images...I bet they live a very lonely life.

But that is NOT what a PaD is about. Your pbase family understands that. You are doing exactly what a PaD is...capturing a moment in your daily life to document forever. Your "explanations" are just a way to share with us on a personal level and maybe a way to "blog" your life. What a great thing to have years from now to share with loved ones...

I could go on and on. The bottom line is that "guest" is clueless with zero social skills.

You keep doing what you are doing...it works and your pbase family loves you.
Guest 25-Nov-2007 20:20
OMG.That is such a brilliant response to your "guest",Dave. The timing of this shot is brilliant and exhibits excellent tone, texture and limited DoF - in fact an excellent image of a most unpromising subject!! You can see from others comments that you do not have to justify your images. You have a great eye for a photograph and have posted some really striking images.I really don't give a "guest" what this piece of ---- thinks, and neither does anyone else!!
Ann...25-Nov-2007 19:25
Oh Dave!! Well done you!!!!!!!!!

(Come on "Guest" crawl out of the woodwork and show yourself for what you are - and I'm far too polite to say!!!)
Guest 25-Nov-2007 18:56
This is a stunning capture of one of life's more wonderful and exciting moments..

Just before the shit hits...

I think that many of the popular galleries on pbase are there from friends voting on friends...so what? I dont' vote, and don't care to get votes. I am here for myself and the people I enjoy.

Rock on!
Johnny JAG25-Nov-2007 17:55
I have to agree with the previous comments, as another unqualified but less gifted snapper, your shots often inspire me to try that bit harder. Guest doesn't even deserve a response if he hasn't got the balls to show his own 'art'.
Brian McAllister25-Nov-2007 17:51
PBase is a venue for artistic freedom and photographic expression. Your work is admired and enjoyed by many Dave, so keep it coming.
I would have written more, but I have a couple of "snaps" to take this afternoon myself.
As was mentioned below, it's time for this "guest" person to move on. He/she has no credibility and is obviously motivated by something that falls way outside the hobby of photography.

Guest 25-Nov-2007 16:08
Wow, Dave! A very well said and very articulate response with the perfect photo to boot! :)
Guest 25-Nov-2007 15:02
what a wonderful thought-out and to the point response to someone who did not have the kahunas to leave his/her name.
Guest 25-Nov-2007 14:59
Here we go again, you are not number 1, I am almost, shit.
Ian York25-Nov-2007 14:39
At times like these I am reminded of the Capital Radio slogan
from the early 80’s - If it moves Funk It
Tricia25-Nov-2007 14:36
A well captured shot, and I too would love to see some of the no doubt wonderful photographs that "Guest" produces. I am just glad the photo was in B&W, I don't think I could stomach it in colour at this early hour!
Scott Browne25-Nov-2007 14:07
Your shots are much better than some of the "popular" galleries on pbase. The vote-traders make up the first several pages of "popular" galleries, and a large majority of their shots aren't even as pleasant to look at as this one. Keep up the "unqualified" snapping!
Carole Stevens25-Nov-2007 13:59
Guest has waaay too much time on their hands, makes you wonder if its the same guest that Jen had too, they are obviously so jealous of your work they have to put you down, thats what jea;ous people do!
Youve never boasted, we all love and support you, that is what PBase is all about, but guest wouldnt even understand that!
You have talent and good on you for having the patience and experience to get the stunning shots you achieve, its never meaningless.
You have friends that love your inspirational work!
Guest 25-Nov-2007 12:37
YES, YES, YES! I would say more but I have to explain the latest snapshot I took. And, oh yeah, VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV!
JW25-Nov-2007 11:37
Dave - we're full support for you! 'Guest' isn't worthy of the courtesy you have given by your detailed reply.
And, forgive me, but this picture is not entirely appropriate as the subject is the warm and fertile result of a sophisticated, life-giving digestive process!! None of which could be said for those negative, pointless comments. !! ROTFL !
Nicki Thurgar25-Nov-2007 08:42
Oh, and er, your shot put me off my breakfast! ROFL!! ;o)
Nicki Thurgar25-Nov-2007 08:41
Dave, you don't have to explain yourself or justify anything to this person! You have talent and a great eye for a picture - so what if you haven't sat there for two hours to get it - in some respects I think being able to STILL get a well composed & exposed shot in pressurised circumstances with limited time is just as talented than having sat on your arse for hours waiting to get that shot! ;o) This person obviously has WAY too much time on their hands - and like Bev says - why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is & show everyone HIS "so perfect" work? You keep at it, mate! Your friends really appreciate your talent and enjoy your work!! :O)(and I've never heard you boast either!!)
beverley harrison25-Nov-2007 07:38
but guest takes the time to write all of this?(said incredulously!)
you must be on his favourites page for him to be able to find you!
he obviously keeps a check on what you are taking....
so what does guest do with the rest of his life?
can we see some of his incredibly perfect work?
Guest 25-Nov-2007 06:14
Wow, some people have way to much time on their hands.
I thought pbase was set up for those who want to display the hobby for others to view if they wish, to inspire others hopefully, but not to be belittled for something they enjoy.
To your guest maybe it's time to find another place to play..
Dave Hein25-Nov-2007 06:09
well done!
Simon Chandler25-Nov-2007 06:08
Glad you have saved this shot to show your "guest" what he/she is really full of. Excellent image though not for the faint of heart. v
Dan Chusid25-Nov-2007 05:19
OMG!
:^O

May the bluebird of happiness poop on all the "guests"
who think they're qualified to critique negatively behind
the shield of anonymity.
