Blue Movie

We got to Maine very late yesterday to meet my brother and family from the UK and some of my American
family. We spent an extremely lazy day lounging around the lake side and popping around the lake on a
boat. These damselflies were everywhere and stopped long enough to grab some shots. Hopefully we'll be
making a point of seeing some lighthouses tomorrow.

Rearrange those initials for OMG! Another "GUEST" comment! Now, you know this is someone who is actually on pbase and hiding behind the darn "GUEST" choice. Drives me insane. Why can't the real person send the same comment to you privately and stand up for what he/she believes in? Give me a break!
Hey Dave, great shot, man. No way did you ever toot your own horn.
Makes me wanna vote just because I can!

Nicest damsel fly shot I've seen today.

I think what MOG was (so tactlessly) trying to say is that the culture of congratulations and amazement at shots that really aren't amazing tend to impede the path to improvement - read "The Emperor's New Clothes" syndrome. I do agree that this is a pretty good capture. However, I would stop well short of calling it excellent or great. MOG is, again, tactlessly correct in that a little bit of fill flash would have pushed this image to the next level by bringing out detail in the face and punching up the background. Certainly not a bad shot, but it had the potential to be a lot better, regardless of the amount of time you had to spend on it. Not trying to pile on, but I appreciate all criticism, and hope others do as well. -Ben

Thank you guest - MOG?
Point taken, but I think I emphasized grabbing the shot. I don't think I stated that this was better or different to the other hundreds of thousands of pictures on Pbase. The point was that it was a picture I took that day and posted as a quick choice of several hundred.
I appreciate I can do better, but patience and time are not always on my side.

Great catch Dave. Looking forward to
seeing those lighthouses and Maine.

Great detail? Not so sure I see what differentiates this particular scene from the 100,000 other damselfly shots on PBase. Contrary to the comments left, there is actually _zero_ detail in the face/eyes of the blue fly, and nothing really stands out. It's a _decent_ shot because they are mating, but there are hundreds if not thousands on PBase that are composed better, more in focus, sharper and with better post processing (the background is way too murky). I think you're at the point, Dave, where you need to consider composition - what makes a great photo - not what snapshot is going to get comments from people on PBase. Just a little hint here - fill flash is your friend in situations like this. MOG
