Trying Multiple shoe flashes

Finally figured out how to set a Canon 580ex to master canon slaved flashes without the 580 on the camera going off (except for a pre-flash) I really do have to get a wireless transmitter for the camera and receivers for the flashes so I can use my 580 off the camera! For this picture I used Patty's 430ex bounced off an umbrella, another 580 bounced off an umbrella and my Sunpak 383 with a Lumiquest softbox on it high up over Ricky's left as a hair light. I first experimented with white paper as the background and the red fabric draped over the table, but the white was really too harsh, so I just lowered the paper holder and draped the fabric over the paper. Ricky should have been farther from the background but the fabric wasn't really long enough to do that - still with the lights placed as their shown in the diagram in this gallery, you don't get shadows on the background. Earlier I placed a little Ritz MS-1 on a lower table behind the posing table and in front of the background and aimed it on the white paper. It was way too bright. I took it away. I used the Paint with Light II action to lighten the background around Ricky's head and made a levels adjustment to darken the fabric in the front which had too much light. I am longing for that nice Payne's Grey Owen's backdrop...but it's fun to play with what I have.

I think he looks great on this background and you did a very good job with lighting. I'm really enjoying your portrait studio journey!

That worked quite well, the light is very good and does not have any tell-tale signs of flash usage.

Looks nice Isabel. I will look forward to your gray background too. I think Ricky will look spectacular on that background.
