Made a duplicate layer underneath another duplicate and used gaussian blur on it. Made a layer mask on the top layer and used a soft brush with black to remove the sharp area to let the blurred background of the layer below show through. Not a super great job at the top of his head, but I think the cropping and background blurring really helped the viewer concentrate on the main subject.
