Kestrels are migrating north, and today I saw 4 of them, though only this one male was cooperative. I watched him go into the falcon stoop diving from the phone wires and catch a vole or something small. What has puzzled me is that he didn't spend very much time with his meal before he was once again up on the phone wire looking for another opportunity. Does anyone know if they cache their food or eat only a certain part of their prey? I have seen this both times I've watched them from a distance. I don't believe it was me that caused it because it returned to the same spot each time and didn't really pay any attention to me in my car.
My friend Eric has told me that if hunting is really good they will only eat the head.
