Speenhamland Schoolchildren pick up an award for their innovative film - watch it here
THEY may still be at junior school, but a group of children are showing may just have what it takes to make it big in the film industry.
Eleven youngsters from Speenhamland Primary School have won the Best Script award in the West Berkshire Cineclub branch.
The competition rewards the best in young filmmaking talent, and the children were able to pick up their gong at a glitzy awards ceremony at the Corn Exchange earlier this month.
Their film, entitled Hoodlings, is a mock nature documentary about the discovery of a mysterious new species, who conceal their faces with hoods and run amok around Northcroft on their scooters.
Ten-year-old Luke Newman, one of the team who wrote, directed, edited and starred in the film, said the wildlife-watching aspect of the film was a tribute to Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter who was killed by a stingray last year.
“I wanted people to remember him by it,” he said.
James Haslam, also aged 10, said he really enjoyed making the film.
“It had quite a bit of humour to it,” he said.
“There were lots of lines to learn, but we put a lot of them in our own words.”
The concept was though up by Luke and two other children – Ryan Coventry and Tyler Swan, both aged 11.
And it wasn’t just Steve Irwin that got the Speenhamland treatment. The film also draws from children’s classic Scooby Doo.
The children made a film called The Meeting last year, which was premiered at the Corn Exchange.
When asked who would want to work in film when they grew up, eleven hands im-mediately reached for the sky.
“I’d like to be an actor,” said Tyler.
“I’d like to work with cameras, maybe as a director”, James said.
“Actually, I’d love to be a stuntman - I’m a daredevil.”
Emma Tindall, aged 11, said she found it hard to cut the film down.
“Editing is the hardest bit,” she said.
“You use all the best bits, and it’s still too long and you have to get rid of some more.”
Peter Dove, the teacher in charge of the film projects, said the children were a hive of creativity.
“They’re very talented,” he said.
“They have all these ideas and I have to try to tie them down and help turn them into a script.
“You come out after two hours needing a drink.”
The full list of contributors is as follows:
