Look what I found. This is circa 1972 (i.e., Vietnam era), so I guess it's sort of a retro self-portrait, although I didn't take it. For those old salts wondering about the beard (or think I must have been in someone else's navy), this was during the era of ADM Elmo Zumwalt (don't you just love that name?), who didn't see why beards interferred with a sailor's ability to do his job (not counting gas mask leakage). Unfortunately, I spent most of my short career on an Air Force base, and I was constantly being stopped by colonels and generals who thought I was a disgrace to the uniform. I still have the beard, but I've lost the bellbottoms and loud plaid civvies. (BTW, [begin rant]I like to pull out this picture when someone asks why I'm disgusted with national leaders, say like vice presidents, or secretaries of defense, who have the balls to send young men and women to war and pontificate about patriotism, when they've never worn (indeed, actively avoided) a uniform themselves.[end rant])
