Course marshals are used at key locations on a race course to direct runners and, sometimes, traffic. One of the problems of being a course marshal at a "down course" location -- say mile 20 of a marathon (26.2 mi) -- is that you often have time on your hands waiting for the runners. This course marshal obviously came prepared and is having to problems dealing with the runner arrival delay.
I also decided to develop some variations on the original:
