10/18/04 - Key Production Line

Boyds, MD

Well, how else do you think they make all those keys? They are stamped out by a large brass stamping and grooving machine, then hooked onto the assembly chain link by workers with small, nimble fingers and really good eyesight. Myopia, arthritis, itchy fingers, keypull tunnel syndrome, dizziness, and postal fever are common work-related injuries. The company, however, provides full medical care, including eyeglasses, talcum powder, recalled Vioxx, and orthopaedic and psychiatric visits. No weapons or ammunition are allowed on the factory floor or lunchroom.

It's amazing what people both choose to do and have to do with their time. Personally, I rue the "invention" of money and work. Man wastes so much of the short time he has on earth in this kind of work rather in the kind of creative work others, like photographers, choose to do. If it weren't for money, consumerism, greed, and the like, maybe all of us could choose the creative side. But .... Oh - very nice and interesting photo.

At first glance at the thumbnail, I thought this was a line of soldiers! Fascinating picture and great commentary as well.
