8/20/04 - YASP (Yet Another Self Portrait)

I'm trying to develop some skill in composing and preparing b&w SP shots. Trying to learn how to get best texture, lighting, contrast, etc. This was originally a terribly underexposed shot that I'd mucked with earlier, before I learned some better techniques to rescue such problem pics. I think this might have been better with a black background, but it did look a little severe. This is one of several I've added to my SP gallery.

Actually, I'd planned a shot of me sleeping in the nude, but Angela beat me to it -- besides, she's a lot cuter, has nice freckles on her arms -- and she's not drooling. I really do need to get some better models -- or a life.

Sometimes, when you work on an image, it can becomes so all-engrossing. Whatever magic you used came out well :-) nice work ! Unusual SP, thanks ! Lydia

Good work, and apparantly, good rescue as well!

In the case of this shot, the original was way underexposed, so I started with the basic trick of duplicating the basic layer and setting the blending mode of the new layer to screen. This lightens the overall image without losing detail. This can be repeated as many times as necessary, perhaps using a reduced opacity setting on the last layer if it overlightens the image. I think I used 3 or even 4 duplicate layers before getting where I needed. Then I had to do the hard part -- apply the ugly filter.

Kind of like the white b/g here. Also the positioning.
I've said it before, I think, but you've got great, piercing eyes.
Want to share some of your rescue procedures? Some of us could really use the help :)

Cute nose? Good Grief - now I *know* I need a new model! (Unfortunately, I can't get a damn thing on a trade-in.)
