At this time of year there is a steady migration of whales north along the eastern Australian
coastline. Southern Right and Humpback whales swim past in their thousands. There's a fairly
lucrative business in taking sight seers out through the Sydney Harbour Heads to watch them. Since
the days of commercial whale hunting in Australia these animals have made a heartening recovery.
An estimated 12,000 made the journey last year - up from a mere few hundred, 80 years ago.
