This is part of a memorial to all of the ships named "Parramatta" which have seen service with the
Royal Australian Navy. Prior to "Federation" in 1901, Australians maritime protection was
officially the responsibility of the Australian squadron of the "Royal Navy". With the advent of
the RAN, most of those ships were purchased by the new Commonwealth Government. The first vessel
purpose built for the RAN, however, was the "HMAS Parramatta", one of several 900 ton torpedo boat
destroyers. This is the actual stern of that first "Parramatta" which saw service from 1910 to
1928. There have been four "Parramattas" all told. The current one is an ANZAC class frigate, which
was commissioned in 2003.
