I love the name of this business, "The Gun Shearer". When Australia's wool industry was at its peak,
there were many many people earning a good living, shearing sheep. Being a good shearer (which meant
shearing many sheep per day) was a matter of considerable professional pride but the most productive
shearer in each team was known as the "gun" shearer, who was paid more money than the others. The
gun shearer worked hard to STAY the "gun" while the other men worked hard to BECOME the gun and
earn more. It was a good arrangement for shearing contractors and property owners who were always
interested in processing more sheep in less time. T'was back breaking work.
It was also true that many shearers earned a living as barbers in the "off season". Can you imagine
a fashionable person today coming to get his/her hair styled by a gun shearer!! Of course, in the case
of someone such as myself it's hardly going to make much difference.
