The highway proceeds predictably for some time until we spy the sign which heralds our approach to
the village of Wentworth Falls, named after one of the three intrepid explorers who pioneered
the route which crosses the mountains into the New South Wales interior. It's been something of a
downhill journey since Leura. At 867 metres, we have now plummeted 198 metres in altitude since
Blackheath. Incidentally Charles Darwin visited the district in 1836. He is reputed to have followed
a track from the tiny hamlet (as it was then) to the Jamison Valley. The route has been upgraded
for visitors and is called "The Darwin Walk".
