Ibiza - Formentera Ferries

The fast - and not-so-fast - ferries taking people between Ibiza and Formentera throughout many summers.

After many years of co-operation, I noticed on my early 2011 visit that Balearia and Trasmapi appear to be competing again - with some ferries operating at around the same times. The boats have also lost their dual markings. In June 2011, nearly all of the jet and express ferries were operated by Trasmapi - the exception being Eivissa Jet, which now carried Balearia markings, operating the route with Nixe. By the end of 2011 Eivissa Jet no longer had Balearia markings, and appears still to be a Trasmapi boat.

By September 2011, Balearia had acquired two more old Fjellstrand 38.8m's (similar to Eivissa Jet) for the route from an Italian company, imaginatively named 'Maverick' and 'Maverick Dos'. Neither looked as smart as Eivissa Jet.

In September 2011 Mediterranea Pitiusa's Westamaran 95, Aigues de Formentera, seemed to have gone. I'm not surprised because it is some years since I saw this boat in service. However, she still appears in Mediterranea Pitiusa's fleet list in early 2012. Late in 2011, an addition to the Mediterranea Pitiusa fleet appeared. Monohull "Aires de Formentera" was built in 2007 and was previously named "Jacques Cartier", operated by the french Compagnie Corsaire between St Malo and Jersey. Now repainted, She has been operating the Formentera - Ibiza route during the winter season.

In 2011, I wrote: "It will be interesting to see what 2012 brings......"

On 15th February, Maverick Dos ran aground spectacularly on the small island of Sa Torreta, off Espalmador, whilst crossing from Ibiza to Formentera, beached completely clear of the water by the time she stopped. Her captain stayed on the ferry until all passengers and crew had been safely evacuated. She was finally removed from Sa Torreta on 23rd May, arriving at Denia for repair on 24th. See: https://pbase.com/davel/maverickdos During the 2012 summer season Balearia chartered another fastjet, Balear Jet, from Interilles as a replacement.

Thanks for visiting, Dave.
Maverick Dos, the ferry that ran aground in darkness on the evening of 15th February 2012, has been
repaired and returned to Formentera on 6th June 2013. She has been in service between Ibiza and Formentera since then.

There are some reports that she was operating from Palma, Mallorca earlier in 2013.

In early July 2012, Balear Jet was introduced onto the Ibiza-Formentera Route - almost certainly diverted from her usual Mallorca-Menorca route as a replacement for the ill-fated Maverick Dos during the high season.
Chartered from Interisles, she returned to Mallorca at the end of September 2012.

Currently registered in Limassol, Cyprus, Balear Jet was built by AA Marine Brodrene - Hyen, Norway in 1989 and was originally named San Pietro, operating between Germany and Denmark, Finland and Estonia, England (Newhaven) and France.
In 1997 she was re-named Maria Dolores and operated in the Balearics for Interilles Express.
In 2002 she was re-named Sea Jet 1, operating in Malta the Adriatic Sea.
After being laid-up in Greece for a period, in 2007 she was bought by Interilles Express and later re-named Balear Jet , operating between Mallorca and Menorca.
